SIUOPP report the Special Investigations Unit has invoked it’s mandate after a fatal single vehicle collision overnight on Highway 64 in Lavigne.

Police say Highway 64 south from Highway 17 to Highway 535 is now open in both directions (as of 4:50pm Wednesday).

 

The SIU, meantime, says preliminary information is that around 11:30 last night, West Nipissing Police received a call regarding a Jeep Cherokee being driven by a man, with officers dispatched to locate him.

One officer saw the vehicle, attempted to follow it and lost sight of it soon after.

The SIU goes on to says around 11:45 pm, police received a call that a vehicle had struck a tree on Highway 64, and was engulfed in flames.

The driver of the jeep succumbed to his injuries.

Four four SIU investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist are investigating.

According to their website, the SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
