Plenty of weekend events on the go in North Bay

There’s no shortage of activities on the go this weekend in North Bay.

From fundraising BBQ’s and walks, to a weekend Pow Wow celebration, scholarships being awarded, charity day at the Carousel and mini-train, a cadets parade and much more.

There’s also induction ceremonies tonight (Friday) involving the North Bay Musicians and Entertainers Hall of Recognition, with plenty of music and entertainment at the Clarion.

The Hall of Recognition is welcoming nine new members.

They include Rod Carley, Tim Clarke, Cliff Gervais, Peter Handley, Susan Hay, Terry McLay, the North Bay Symphony, Roger Perreault and Francis “Newfie” Robbins.

The Hall is located at the North Bay Mall along side the Country Music Wall of Honour.

Seven students are benefiting from the 3rd annual Operation Legacy scholarships being awarded today (Friday) by Canadore College and 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron.

Operation Legacy provides current and former CFB North Bay military families with an opportunity to receive a scholarship to attend Canadore.

It also supports dependent children of a Canadian Forces member who since 2002 have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving on active duty.

The Stockfish Carstar Soaps It Up carwash and BBQ goes today (Friday) at 23 Commerce Court from 8am to 3pm.

Funds raised go to CF Canada and The Gathering Place, North Bay’s Soup Kitchen.

Meantime, The Empire‘s annual Relay For Life fundraising bbq goes at 425 Fraser.

Funds raised support the Canadian Cancer Society.

The event goes from 11am to 1pm.

The North Bay Indian Friendship Centre is hosting the Maamwi Kindaaswin Festival & Pow Wow Celebration today (Friday) through Sunday.

The theme is “Honoring Our Veterans“.

There’s a free Educational Day on the 1944 Normandy Landings from 10am to 4pm today. Blackstone performs tonight at Discovery North Bay Museum ($10 cover).

The Pow Wow Celebration takes place by the museum tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

Grand Entry is at noon and 7pm tomorrow, then noon on Sunday.

There are also Sunrise ceremonies at 6am each day.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is Charity Day at the North Bay Heritage Railway and Carousel.

Proceeds from the sale of all ride tickets sold during the day will go towards a donation to Near North Palliative Care.

The waterfront attractions are open from 10 am to dusk, weather permitting.

Themed interpretive hikes through the Laurier Woods Conservation Area are taking place on the first Saturday of each month this year, through December.

The first event goes tomorrow.

It’s all a part of the 25th anniversary of the Friends of Laurier Woods.

A full range of environmental experts have been lined up to lead the walks. The theme this month is glaciation.

The free walks start at 10am from the parking lot at the end of Brule Street.

Local residents are joining together to walk to raise funds to support ALS families in the Walk for ALS.

Currently there are 2,500 to 3,500 Canadians living with ALS, a neurodegenerative terminal disease.

The walk begins at 10 am tomorrow (Saturday) at the Waterfront.

The goal is to raise $20,000 this year.

Money raised goes towards research and providing support services to help Canadians living with ALS.

The 547 Canuck Squadron is holding their final parade of the season tomorrow (Saturday).

The parade wraps up the cadet’s accomplishments from September to June with awards being presented to various cadets.

The public is invited, and asked to be seated at the Callander Community Centre before the reviewing officer arrives at 2:30 pm.

A recruiting drive for the 2015-16 training year is also underway with young people between 12 and 18 able to enroll in cadets.

The YMCA North Bay is hosting their Healthy Kids Day on Sunday.

The free event promotes the importance and benefits of healthy active living by encouraging simple, fun daily actions.

From 10am to 2pm in Thomson Park, the Y will be offering healthy snacks, giant inflatables, games, fitness fun, music and dance, entertainment, health and safety tips and draws more.

A number of community groups will also be on hand.

Residents around the north are getting ready for the Alzheimer Society Walk for Alzheimer’s on Sunday.

Registration for the local event is at 11am on Sunday with the walk starting at noon.

Funds raised go towards programs and services for those living with Alzeheimer’s disease and dementia, along education and public awareness.

Officials say one in ten seniors today are living with Alzeheimer’s disease or other dementia.
