Atlantic Power Corporation has revised contractual arrangements for three facilities in northern Ontario including North Bay, with the company beginning the process of “mothballing” the local plant.

In a release, the company says it’s based on it’s assessment of the Ontario power market, including the impact on plant economics.

Purchase power agreements that have been terminated, were set to expire at the end of the year.

MPP Vic Fedeli says it’s the first casualty with the Premier’s climate change action plan.

“Put another check mark beside another natural gas box on the climate change action plan, hire people out of Quebec and fire people here in the province of Ontario.  It’s very disappointing and very disillusioning,’‘ he said.

Fedeli says  it’s not about money, it’s about ideology.

He says 10 employees will be impacted locally.

The company says it’s committed to working with those employees affected by the decision to mothball the facilities.
