An increase in the number of snowmobile-related deaths this season has OPP concerned and they’re looking for enthusiasts to stop taking unnecessary risks.

That includes speeding, loss of control, alcohol use and driver inattention.

Sgt Andy Bishop with the OPP S.A.V.E. Team says unsafe ice is also an issue.

“There is no safe ice, but if you do want to go out on the ice, ensure the area that you’re going has been previously checked, that it’s safe to do so and that it can carry the weight limit of what you plan on traveling on the ice,” he said.

When it comes to speed enforcement, OPP Constable Brian Bowes says there’s a concerning trend.

“We’re coming across snowmobilers who have a cavalier attitude towards high speed on the trails. They’re failing to recognize the risk they’re putting themselves, and others at,” he said.

Including a fatality Wednesday evening near Huntsville, police say 7 people have died recently, bringing the season total to 14 this winter.

That’s up from 8 at this point last year.
