The 2016 Travelers Insurance Northern Ontario Men’s Curling Championships officially got underway yesterday (Wednesday).

The event is taking place at the North Bay Granite Club, with the opening ceremonies held last night.

City Reporter Matthew Sookram was there.

Master of Ceremonies Dave Bennett officially kicked off the tournament and North Bay Sports Hall of Famer Jack Lockhart threw out the ceremonial first rock

The eight teams were introduced to a sold out crowd and Granite Club General Manager Bobby Ray says they had to add extra seating.

Patrick Gelinas’ team is from Mattawa and they had strong support from the crowd, many of whom traveled in from Mattawa.

Three rinks are undefeated after two draws.

Mike Assad, Jordan Chandler and Brad Jacobs are all 2-0. Patrick Gelinas and Colin Koivula are both 1-1 while three rinks, Dylan Johnston, Robbie Gordon and Tanner Horgan are looking for their first wins in the third draw, which gets started at one o’clock today (Thursday).

Games continue through Sunday.
