“There really is no such thing as safe ice, so be cautious and be prepared.”

That’s what the North Bay Snowmobile Club is conveying after a weekend incident that saw a snowmobile trail groomer break through the ice on a local pond.

Director of Public Relations and Marketing Shawn Flindall says this is the worst year he can remember for poor ice conditions.

Officials say ice can always be dangerous because of inconsistencies in thickness and changing conditions, pointing out the changing weather, mild temperatures and frequent rain has been making things even more unpredictable.

Overall, they advise everyone to use extreme caution.
