vote

The province has introduced changes to the Municipal Elections Act and if passed could see ranked ballots used in municipal elections.

A voter could rank candidates on Election Day in order of preference.

City Councillor Tanya Vrebosch says this is something worth considering but she is concerned about the cost.

Still she says ranked ballots would give the public more choice as to who holds key positions on city council and that is the three committee chairs. The province says if their changes are adopted the ranked ballots system could be in place by the next municipal election in 2018.

The province also wants to make it easier to change information on the voters list and to not allow the nomination process to start until May.

It now begins in January.
