budworm tracker logoThe spruce budworm is an insect that can have a negative effect on spruce and fir trees in Canada.

Research Scientist Doctor Chris MacQuarrie says every 30 years or so, there is an outbreak of the insect and they eat the needles of those trees which causes the trees to die off.

He says we are entering that outbreak cycle and Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Forest Service is looking budworm tracker recruits.

He says they send out special spruce budworm trapper kits which recruits will hang out in the woods.

MacQuarrie says you can check it a couple of times a week and then report your findings on their website.
