Saturday Sports Wrap

Several local hockey teams in action on Saturday night, including the men and women Lakers’ teams in their annual Pink in the Rink game presented by Scotiabank.

As well, in OUA action there are basketball and volleyball scores to pass your way.

(NOJHL)

In NOJHL action, the Powassan Voodoos with a convincing 10-2 victory over the French River Rapids at the Powassan Sportsplex on Saturday night.

 Jake Staples and Tyler Peters had two goals each while Alexi Rivet, Kyle Moore, Michael Silveri, Daniel Walker, and Francois Lemelin also scored.

The Voodoos are back on the ice Monday night again at home to face the French River Rapids.

Game time is 7 p.m.

(OUA HOCKEY)

It was the annual Scotiabank Pink in the Rink game for the Nipissing Lakers men’s and women’s hockey teams Saturday night.

On the women’s side, the Lakers fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Brock Badgers.

Natalie Graham scored her first OUA goal for the Lakers in the third period, before the Badgers tied the game with just over four minutes to play.

Nipissing outshot Brock 30-28 overall while Sabrina Picard made 27 saves in net for the home side.

The Lakers are back in action with a pair of home games against Queens on Friday and UOIT on Saturday.

On the men’s side, the Lakers finished off a home and home sweep over the Laurentian Voyaguers with a 4-2 win Saturday night, coming off a 5-4 OT victory in Sudbury the night before.

Colin Campbell had a goal and an assist in Saturdays win.

The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the 1st period.

Kirk Rafuse was solid in net, making 35 saves for his second win in a row.

Nipissing will remain on home ice, hosting the Carleton Ravens and UQTR Patriotes next weekend at Memorial Gardens.

(OUA BASKETBALL)

The Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball team lost to a tough Ryerson Rams team 89-50.

They trailed 25-8 after the first quarter and 50-17 going into half-time.

The Lakers have now dropped five in a row.

Jamie Soffer and Claire Abbott had 18 points in the loss. It’s a road trip next weekend for the Lakers who visit Western and Windsor.

On the men’s side the Lakers also lost to Ryerson, 97-68.

The Lakers were behind by just five points after the first ten minutes of the game, but missed on several opportunities to close the gap.

After a 44-31 lead into half-time the Rams came charging out in the third by scoring 30 points.

In the loss the Lakers saw good individual efforts from Marcus Lewis with 16 points and 9 rebounds, and Jerron Rhodes with 12 points.

The men’s team will make the same trip to Western and Windsor as the women next weekend.

(OUA Volleyball)

The Nipissing Lakers women’s team lost in four sets to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in a tight contest.

The Lakers fell 25-20 in the first set, bounced back in the second 25-17, but fell in the final two 25-23 and 25-19.

It’s their second straight loss.

Leading the attack was Annabelle Harvey who had seven kills and 11.5 points, while Tracy Hammerton had eight kills and 11 points and Erika Lapierre added nine kills and 10 points.

Nipissing remains on their five match road trip, as they head down south to face the Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs next weekend.
