If you’re out and about in the community this week, you may end up experiencing a pop-up urban dance show.

Dance company Gadfly is performing five-minute dances and interactive workshops in public places tomorrow (Wednesday) through Saturday.

Spokesperson Bernie Pennie says it’s all a part of the 4th Annual On The Edge Fringe Festival.

“We’re going to daycamps, we’re going to people standing in lines, going to a movie or to the Chief Commanda. They are organized and planned, but I think a lot of people that will be in the area when we’re doing the pop-up dances won’t expect it, so that’s part of the charm,” he says.

There are a dozen shows altogether, before the Festival’s closing performance Saturday night at the Capitol Centre.

Pennie says they’re helping to create cultural awareness, but that’s not all.

“We’ve been describing it as edgy, but it’s very artsy as well. Then there is the movement side, the health side, a lot of people dance, just to dance,” he says.

The performances will also be shared live on social media.

It’s all possible thanks to Ontario Arts Council funding under the OntarioDances Program and is about promoting dance by building on existing audiences while creating new ones.

They’re bringing “dance to the people” throughout the week. Here is the full schedule:
