City council is trying to weigh their options on fixing the amount of accidents on Algonquin.

Three presenters pleaded to council to make the area safer.

One even called for the stretch between the bypass and downtown to be made a community safety zone to protect pedestrians.

Dr. Rebecca Siedler is a veterinarian who works at a clinic on Algonquin and says she has been the first responder to too many crashes.

She also has personal stake in it. “Having been in an accident there and had it affect my life for the last six months.  I know a lot of people in similar accidents and been affected massively. It’s just something that needs to be done.”

Siedler was rear ended in March of last year.  It left her with post concussion syndrome and she hasn’t worked since.  In the meantime, she hoping for at least more police patrols.

“People come off the highway, they’re doing 60-70km/h. they’re whizzing past the clinic.  The number of screeching tires (at the Bay City Animal Clinic) we hear is insane.”

Councillor George Maroosis agreed and introduced a motion calling for an engineering report on what can and can’t be done, including input from the MTO.
