The NDP are taking aim at gas prices in northern Ontario and calling for action from the province’s new Energy Minister.

Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault recently took over the Energy portfolio for the Liberal Government.

In an open letter, northern New Democrats say he was previously vocal about the issue when he was an opposition MP in Ottawa.

They say Thibeault should direct the Ontario Energy Board to monitor gas pricing, reduce volatility and increase competition.

They’re calling for action before the Canada Day long weekend.

Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says, “people are traveling a lot and people, especially in the north, we depend on gasoline a lot more than other parts of the province, specifically the GTA because they have the option of transit and other ways of getting around. We don’t.”

They also want to meet with Thibeault to discuss ways to get gas prices and energy prices in Northern Ontario under control.
