The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities is welcoming the next phase involving the Energy East pipeline proposal.

The National Energy Board announced last week that a 21 month review process is getting underway.

FONOM President Al Spacek says the pipeline project is by far safer than transporting oil by rail and truck and has plenty of economic benefits.

When asked about concern in North Bay about drinking water, Spacek says their endorsement for the project is not carte blanche.

He says they expect the latest safety and environmental regulations to be adhered to and that the company will be innovative in making sure the pipeline is as safe as can be.

Meantime, Spacek says the project is expected to create thousands of jobs, including here in North Bay.
