The Health Unit is holding an immunization clinic tomorrow (Thursday) in Sturgeon Falls after a confirmed outbreak of pertussis or “whooping cough” in the West Nipissing area.

Officials say it’s spread easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes and can result in a cough lasting for several weeks.

They’re asking residents to contact a health care provider if you or your child develops signs of pertussis, pointing out the best protection is to get vaccinated.

Tomorrow’s clinic runs from 3 pm to 6 pm in the Hall of Fame room at the Sturgeon Falls Sports Complex.

Quick Facts

  • Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing and may end in gagging, vomiting, or trouble breathing. Sometimes, after a coughing attack, the child may give a loud “whoop” when breathing in, which is why the infection has been called “whooping cough”.
  • Anyone can get pertussis, but it is most dangerous for children under a year old and pregnant woman in their third trimester.
