A grade nine student at West Ferris Secondary has been named a junior scout for the Powassan Voodoos.
Dillon Anderson has been doing a co-op placement with the team and was presented with a Voodoos staff golf shirt at a school assembly on Thursday.
He tells BayToday he’s a fan of the team.
“I just liked following them and looking at their stats, then I messaged Chris (Dawson) online and it just took off from little conversations all the way up to scouting reports I’m doing for them now,” he says.
Specialist High Skills Major business teacher Karen Bond tells BayToday Anderson is in her grade nine computer class and is passionate about hockey and hockey analytics.
“Dillon really does have a great sense of hockey and being able to analyze players and the game. I think he actually has a dream of being a scout, whether it’s OHL or NHL,” she says.
Anderson confirms that goal.
“It’s going to take a lot of hard work, but I’m up for the challenge,” he says.
Voodoos General Manager Chris Dawson says he talked with coach Max Gavin about expanding Anderson’s role with the team.
“We thought maybe this would be an opportunity, he could go to Great North Midget League games this year for us and he could do it for more than just a co-op, he could be a member of the hockey organization,” he says.
Today’s assembly was also held to kick off the 25th annual Trojan Parade for Cancer fundraiser.
Each year students raise funds by canvassing door-to-door, taking part in dress-down days and other special events for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The silver anniversary parade goes Wednesday, May 30th.
Over the years more than $250,000 has been raised through the annual event to help with cancer research and support services.
